Maseru, Lesotho

The primary focus of the Austin-Maseru Sister City Committee is providing humanitarian aid for Maseru and educational programs in Austin. The committee also provides hospitality for African students enrolled in Austin educational institutions.

Maseru is the capital of Lesotho, a country surrounded by South Africa. Lesotho, nicknamed the "Switzerland of Africa" due to its mountains, is home to Africa's largest hydroelectric project.

Partnership Outcomes:

  • Annual golf tournament fundraiser for HIV/AIDS organizations
  • Training exchange between Austin and Maseru surgeons—received the Sister Cities International Special Achievement Award
  • “We Agree” Workshop—received the Sister Cities International Best Single Youth Project Annual Award
