International Fire Code and Local Amendments

Effective January 7, 2018, the City of Austin has adopted the 2015 edition of the International Fire Code with local amendments. The Austin Fire Department is in the process of revising and updating the Fire Protection Criteria Manual through the City’s rule making process. When the revision is completed, a link to the updated Fire Criteria Manual will be provided. In the interim, the 2012 Fire Protection Criteria Manual can still be used for guidance in the application of the 2015 International Fire Code and amendments. Copies of either the 2015 International Fire Code adopting ordinance and amendment or the Fire Criteria manual can be obtained from the office of the City Clerk (first floor of City Hall) or from the Fire Marshal’s Office (second floor of One Texas Center).

In an effort to make the application of codes and standards more predictable, the City of Austin has developed a series of technical interpretation manuals that include a manual of interpretations and guidance for fire code application.
