The City of Austin is no longer accepting applications for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant. The deadline for submission expired on January 15, 2021 at 5:00 p.m.  

We are in the process of reviewing all applications submitted and are exploring how we can use additional federal and local funds to offer assistance for small businesses, start-up companies, entrepreneurs, creatives, and non-profit organizations.

The Austin City Council established the Save Austin’s Vital Economic Sectors (SAVES) Fund through Ordinance No. 20201001-052 to support local industries. Through the SAVES Fund, Austin City Council approved Resolution No. 20201015-73 to designate $5 million for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant. 

The Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant provides immediate and equitably-focused one-time financial assistance to eligible center-based and home-based childcare providers. Providers may apply for grants up to $60,000 per site toward payroll, rent relief, operational costs, and other eligible COVID-19 related expenses. 

As part of a partnership with the City of Austin, United Way for Greater Austin will accept and review all submitted applications. Additionally, consultation services and application assistance will be available to grant applicants. Every eligible application submitted by the deadline will be evaluated against a grant estimator that includes criteria for need and equity.

Eligible Applicants
  • Have a physical address in a City of Austin Council District  
  • Must be a licensed childcare center or childcare home provider (licensed or registered) 
  • Provide full-day childcare to children ages five and younger (full-day is a minimum of 8 hours per day)  
  • Texas Rising Star certified provider, or demonstrate appointment scheduled to complete the Texas Rising Star accreditation assessment, or have National Accreditation (NAEYC or National Accreditation Commission)  
  • Experienced COVID-19 related disruptions    
  • Incurred or plan to incur COVID-19 mitigation and protective equipment expenses 
  • Meet or exceed the City of Austin’s recommended COVID-19 safety guidelines 
  • Does not discriminate against job applicants, employees, and patrons (i.e. families) based on race, creed, color, national origin, sex, gender identity, age, religion, veteran status, disability, or sexual orientation.

  • Businesses not located in a City of Austin Council District

Childcare providers can use grant funds for eligible business expenses incurred after March 1, 2020. Past and future operational expenses incurred during global COVID-19 pandemic are considered eligible. Documentation of expenses will not be required at time of application but must be available upon request.

  • Anti-Discrimination Agreement: This site will comply with policies to support anti-harassment and anti-discrimination practices for business operations and work environment in the City of Austin. Applicants receiving grant awards shall be required to comply with the non-discrimination and anti-harassment policies and practices. Funding Groups

Applicants will be placed into one of three Funding Groups based on the application information submitted.  

50% of funds within each Funding Group will be awarded to providers within low-income zip codes to help achieve funding equity. Then, the other 50% of funds within that funding group will be awarded by random lottery among eligible applicants. Any residual funds within a funding group will be used to grant awards to another funding group.

What is the maximum award I might qualify for?

The maximum award for this grant is $60,000 per site.

Will I need to repay the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant?

No. This is a grant program with no expectation of repayment.

Am I eligible to apply for the second round of the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant if I received funds from the first round?

Yes, however you cannot use these funds for the same expenses.

Are there reporting requirements of the grantees? 

Documentation of expenses will not be required at the time of application but must be available upon request.

Am I guaranteed to receive funds if my business is eligible for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant? 

No. We expect demand to exceed the $5 million available in this program. Every application submitted by January 15th at 5:00 p.m. will be evaluated for funding. 

May I apply for each childcare center I own?

Yes, you may apply for each center. After you enter ownership information on one site application, that information will automatically populate when you start another application for a different site.

Am I eligible for the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant if I received a Childcare Stabilization Grant from the Texas Workforce Commission (TWC) or other grants funded by the CARES Act? 

Yes, however you cannot use these funds for the same expenses.  

Am I eligible to receive the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant if I’m seeking other funds?

Yes, however you cannot use these funds for the same expenses.

Does the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant affect forgivability of any federal Paycheck Protection Program funds that were received from the U.S. Small Business Administration?

No. Receiving the Austin Childcare Provider Relief Grant will not affect the forgivability of Federal Paycheck Protection Program funds.  

Is this application available in multiple languages?

Yes. This application is also available in Spanish. 

Will I get confirmation that my application has been received?

Yes. Applicants will receive a confirmation email at the address provided in the application. The confirmation email will include information about next steps. Please check your spam folder if you cannot locate your confirmation email. 

What are the next steps if my grant application is approved?

A check will be mailed to you via certified mail. Someone in your office will need to be present to accept the envelope. If your center uses a P.O. Box, the check can be mailed there for your convenience. 

What restrictions will be placed on the funds granted?

This grant was created to provide financial assistance to Austin’s childcare provider sector, giving the awardee's discretion on how they use the funds for operations. Visit www.ATXRecovers.com for eligible and ineligible expenses. 

Are early applications given any priority in funding allocations?

No, the application date is not a factor in determining who gets an award. However, you are encouraged to apply early in the application timeframe so that incomplete information and questions can be addressed early. 

What will United Way do with my information?

The City of Austin's contract with United Way requires them not to disclose or use application data and to retain the confidentiality of the application data.  

What is the date range for expenses eligible for reimbursement?

Eligible expenses are those you incurred after March 1, 2020.

Can I use the funds to cover deferred rent or mortgage payments?

Yes, if the rent or mortgage payment is still required to be paid and not forgiven.  

Note: Home providers can cover rent/mortgage only up to the same percentage of the home that is claimed as an IRS deduction. 

How do I know if my center is in a lower-income zip code?

What is a full-day and full-year childcare program?

Full-day means your center provides care for a minimum of 8 hours per day. Full year is continuous service year-round including summer months, with the exception of holidays and winter or spring breaks. 

What do I check if I own my building and do not have a landlord?

If you own your building, you should leave the Attestation check box on the landlord question empty.
