About our Online Exhibits...
The Project in Interpreting the Texas Past (ITP) at the University of Texas at Austin was begun by Dr. Martha Norkunas in 1999 to shed new light on the Texas and American past by researching, interpreting and presenting the histories of women, minority communities, and other underrepresented voices. In a series of seminars Dr. Norkunas trains University of Texas graduate students to evaluate the presentation of the past at historic sites and museums, to do original research, and to conduct in-depth oral history interviews. Graduate students then create innovative interpretive projects for the public at historic sites and museums all over the state of Texas.
In the fall of 2005 the Project in Interpreting the Texas Past selected the George Washington Carver Museum and Cultural Center as the featured museum. Students spent several months visiting the museum, talking with site staff, and creating focused interpretive projects. Ms. Bernadette Phifer, Curator of the Carver Museum, along with Dr. Norkunas, guided the development of the projects. This colaboration with the Museum and ITP has continued through the 2007 school year.
