News From Your City Manager

For the second year in a row Forbes Magazine has put the City of Austin near the top of its list of America’s Best Employers. This year, the City of Austin jumped up to the ninth spot. Last year, we were 22nd.

The annual list from Forbes ranks the top 500 employers in both the public and private sectors. For 2017, the City of Austin was the highest ranking employer in the government services sector.

Other companies in the top ten include Costco, Google, REI, MD Anderson Cancer Center, and Wegmans Food Markets. This is the third year Forbes has ranked the top 500 employers.

We are so proud of this recognition because it highlights what I already know about the City. It reflects the tireless dedication of the more than 13,000 employees who make the City of Austin an incredible place to work. It also recognizes our exceptional employees who are truly committed to serving the people of Austin. I continue to be impressed by our staff and am proud to work alongside them every day.

Forbes created the list by working with online statistics provider Statista to survey more than 30,000 workers from companies with more than 5,000 employees.

Employees were contacted anonymously online without the involvement of their employer. Those surveyed represented the U.S. workforce by gender, age, region, education and ethnicity.

About this blog

I’m genuinely humbled by the opportunity to lead this workforce, even just for this short period of time. I appreciate the confidence this Mayor and Council have shown in me. This is truly a great organization, with exceptional employees at every level, highly dedicated to serving the people of Austin. My challenge is to help them continue to do their best work while Council searches for a replacement for a new City Manager. More about Hart, here.
