The Dougherty Arts Center is excited to welcome Japanese ceramics artist Sashihara-San to Austin this February 4-15, 2017.
Sashihara-San, one of Oita's most respected potters, will work in the Dougherty Arts Center's clay studio and offer a two-day demonstration workshop.
With 35 years of working in clay, Sashihara-San is known for his expressive functional pottery. He states that his current work is “centered on functional pieces for everyday use, however, I experience joy in finding ways to express myself within the confines of this genre. I am inspired by the great masters who have come before me in terms of technique as well as the balance and overall style of my work. I also take inspiration from beautiful natural settings, sculpture, and paintings.”
Sashihara-San apprenticed in Saga Prefecture in the Arita Yaki style of pottery after graduating from university and his work is celebrated throughout Japan in both group and solo exhibitions.
