Give Us 5 Challenge: 3 Easy Tips for Recycling More

Aug 20, 2014 - 12:21 pm

Austin Resource Recovery is challenging all Austinites to recycle 5 pounds more each month. Read below to see how you can help!

Imagine a water bottle that dreams of becoming a pair of jeans, a steel can that hopes to someday be transformed into a bicycle, or a plastic bottle that believes that, one day, it could become a park bench. These are some of the many destinies that could be fulfilled if more Americans took time to do one thing: recycle.

According to the U.S. EPA, the United States produces approximately 250 million tons of trash each year and recycles and composts just over 87 million tons of this material. Think of all the bicycles and park benches that could be produced if all of that was recycled instead of thrown away.

In partnership with Keep America Beautiful, the City of Austin is a leading advocate for the campaign’s message of reuse and renewal. In efforts to achieve its Zero Waste Goal and to engage participation from Austinites, the City is challenging residents to recycle 5 pounds more every month in the Give Us 5 Challenge.

In a world overrun by consumption, 5 pounds is easier to achiever than you think! Next time you’re about to toss something in the trash, stop and consider whether or not it’s recyclable. After all, throwing something away doesn’t make it go away. Your garbage ends up in landfills where it could have detrimental effects on the environment and Austin’s future.

So what can you do to recycle 5 more pounds? Follow these three easy recycling tips to help you get started.

1. Expanding recycling throughout your entire home.
Did you know empty aerosol cans are recyclable? Or empty bottles of laundry detergent? What about the packaging your make-up comes in? All recyclable! There are recyclables in every room, so expand outside of just your kitchen. Need some starting points for recyclables in each room? Check out: austintexas.gov/giveus5.

2. Get everyone involved.
Try making recycling a fun challenge or game in your household. You’ll be surprised at how quickly it all adds up and how fun it can be if everyone is involved.

3. Make it a habit and share your expertise.
Recycle everyday! Start including it in your everyday routine and challenge your friends, coworkers, neighbors and family members to do the same.

Help us not only Keep Austin Weird, but beautiful too. Get started today and give Austin 5 more pounds this month! For more great resources and tips, check out AustinRecycles.com.
