Modified Procedures for Austin City Cemeteries

Modifications to Cemetery Operations Due to COVID-19

The Stay Home – Work Safe order is extended from April 13 to May 8, 2020. The Austin Parks and Recreation Department (PARD) Cemetery Operations  will continue to modify some of its operations in order to promote the health and safety of community members and staff while providing critical services. The City of Austin and Travis County have issued a Public Health Order requiring individuals to remain in place at home, with exceptions for essential work and activities. When conducting an allowed activity, people must maintain at least 6 feet of social distancing.

The following are additional preventative steps put in place for the protection of the community, staff and the families that we serve:

  • Practicing social distancing while assembling at the gravesite
  • Fabric Face Coverings

 This  Stay Home-Work Safe Order adds a new requirement for fabric face coverings for employees and the rest of the Austin community. Austin Public Health asks that people wear face coverings like bandanas, cloths, make-shift masks, or other items that cover the entirety of the nose and mouth. Additional suggestions for face coverings should:

  • fit snugly but comfortably against the side of the face;
  • be secured with ties or ear loops;
  • include multiple layers of fabric;
  • allow for breathing without restriction; and
  • be able to be laundered and machine dried without damage or change to the shape.

It is important to note that the use of face coverings is not a substitute for physical distancing. Physical distancing and all other hygienic practices should be maintained.

The following modified procedures will remain in place:

  • Closing the Administrative Office at 2800 Hancock Dr. and meeting with families/contractors by appointment only.
  • Requesting that all documents to be submitted electronically and originals be dropped in the mail slot.
  • All payments can be accepted via credit card over the phone or checks can be dropped in mail slot.

 As of Monday, April 20, 2020, these preventive steps will be implemented.
